Senior Fellow Lectures Introduction
The Senior Fellows’ Lecture Series was first proposed in 2017 by Prof. Kevin Carson, then-President of the College of Anaesthesiologists. The concept drew inspiration from similar programmes initiated by medical colleges in the UK and Australia.
In September 2017, a meeting with retired Fellows of our College resolved to establish the Senior Fellow’s Lectures. The primary aim was to maintain a connection between retired Fellows and the College while fostering social interaction among colleagues. Based on insights from other institutions, the decision was made to focus on talks delivered by speakers outside of the College to encourage broader engagement.
The inaugural talk was held in January 2018. Since then, the series has averaged 3 – 4 talks annually. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme adapted by hosting meetings on Zoom, resuming in-person gatherings in 2022.
Attendance has steadily grown, though there is room for further participation. The programme’s success owes much to the unwavering support of the College’s leadership, including Presidents Kevin Carson, Brian Kinirons, George Shorten, and Donal Buggy, as well as the College’s administrative staff. This collective effort has ensured both the continuity of the lectures and its invaluable social benefits.
We look forward to seeing more of our Fellows join us in celebrating and expanding this enriching initiative.
