Trainee Courses

Important Note: Mandatory college courses are offered to college trainees as a priority. Any remaining, additional places and add on courses will be advertised to doctors on the waiting lists however places are limited and not guaranteed. Please email simulation@coa.ie for the simulation waiting list and training@coa.ie for the mandatory courses waiting list. Dates for mandatory courses will not be advertised on the college website. For those registered for NCHD Support Scheme(CPD-SS), the CPD-SS year runs from July to July. Each doctor is entitled to 20 CPD points per year. For more details click here.

Course Description
Introduction to Anaesthesiology One day course for doctors commencing the training programme, outlining the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the practice of basic anaesthesia. This course usually takes place in June prior to the commencement of the SAT programme.
Fundamentals of Patient Safety & Professionalism This is a 1-day lecture-based course for SAT year 1’s, which focuses on fundamentals of patient safety science, the importance of human factors, and the fundamentals of quality improvement.
Professionalism in Practice Module Consists of 3 course days and includes the examination of theories of healthcare ethics, outlining relevant aspects of law and regulation, identifying the functions of the IMC, discussing core elements of professionalism (incl. accountability mechanisms), and thinking about how the stressors of professional roles impact on the health, wellbeing, and performance of the individual practitioner. The first 2 days are lecture based, and the third day is presentation based, whereby each attendee presents a short presentation. This course is aimed at senior trainees.
Airway Management Workshop A one day workshop covering advanced approaches to securing the airway in emergency and elective scenarios. Trainees attend this module in the last three years of the Training Programme.
