Safety as we Watch

The definitive text “Safety as we Watch. Anaesthesia in Ireland 1847-1998” by Declan Warde, Joseph Tracey and John Cahill was published in 2022 by Eastwood Books having being commissioned by the College.

That year marked the 175th Anniversary of the first Ether Anaesthesia in Ireland which was administered on January 1st 1847 at The Richmond Hospital, Dublin. Surgeon John McDonnell amputated an arm from Mary Kane of Drogheda only a few weeks after the first demonstration of the anaesthetic effects of ether in Boston in October, 1846 by William Morton. The College crest has elements of the McDonnell coat of arms in acknowledgement.
