The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland is dedicated to educating and training current and future generations of doctors in Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, to have the skills to provide patients with the best care possible.
The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland’s Training Department is responsible for the organisation and implementation of educational programmes/workshops and on-going educational events.
As Anaesthesiologists, our commitment to patient safety is paramount. We bear a profound responsibility to ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of safe care. By fostering a culture of safety through continuous learning, communication and teamwork, we can improve patient outcomes and inspire confidence for those whom we serve.
The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland offer College examinations to doctors from all over the world, who are training to become anaesthetists. We deliver Membership and Fellowship examinations in anaesthesia. In addition we offer doctors exams in Pain Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine.
The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland is committed to supporting Trainees wellbeing throughout their working life. The College advises Trainees to monitor their physical and emotional wellbeing and to seek assistance early if they have any concerns or feel they are experiencing significant stress.

The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland is delighted to announce that the forthcoming Gilmartin Lecture 2021 will be delivered by Mr Turtle Bunbury. The Lecture will take place on Thursday 9th December 2021 at 6.30pm. The meeting will be held as a virtual meeting. From the first issue of January 2022, the British Journal of Anaesthesia will move to online access. In July 2022, BJA Education will also move to a digital format, with an opt-in service for print editions for a further twelve months until June 2023. This transition away from print copies reflects the ongoing commitment of the CAI, RCoA, BJA, and Elsevier to environmental and sustainability concerns. The CAI and the Department of Anaesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard in Boston MA are offering a Fellowship to doctors who will complete the CAI SAT programme on or before July 2022 or who have done so since July 2019. The HSE NDTP Aspire (Post CSCST) Fellowship awards have resulted from the collaborative efforts of HSE’s Acute Hospitals’ Division, Mental Health Division, National Doctors Training and Planning (NDTP) and the Forum of Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies in Ireland. The Fellowships are funded by HSE NDTP and they are recognised and managed through the CAI. The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Introduction to Transesophageal Echo Course is designed to provide an overview of transesophageal echocardiography encompassing machine setup, image acquisition and optimization of basic views. This course is suitable for candidates in later stages of training, trainees who may be considering Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology Fellowships and consultant colleagues who may want a brief refresher.
